With 7 days in Beijing, you'll have time to experience the city's highlights. Just beyond the city limits, the Great Wall winds across the mountains, with restored sections like Mutianyu and Jinshanling easily reached in a day. Back in the city, the hutongs, narrow alleys of courtyard houses, preserve the texture of old Beijing, where residents play mahjong, cycle between tiny shops and gather around the lakes of Shichahai.
