Vor der Reise
Vom Flughafen
Skopje International Airport (SKP) is 25km east of the city. The most reliable option is a taxi, which should cost a fixed 1800 MKD (approx. €30) to the city center. Pre-book a transfer or use the Vardar Express shuttle bus (250 MKD, about €4), which runs every hour to the main bus station.
Unterwegs in der Stadt
The main tourist areas—Centar, the Old Bazaar, and Debar Maalo—are very walkable and best explored on foot. Distances between key sights are short, but the terrain can be hilly, especially around Kale Fortress.
Tipps von Einheimischen
- For the best views of the city and the 'Skopje 2014' skyline, hike up to the Kale Fortress just before sunset. The walk is short but steep, and the golden light on the statues is spectacular.
- Don't just eat in the main square. The best and most authentic Macedonian food is in the small, family-run 'mehanas' tucked in the alleys of the Old Bazaar, like Destan or Stara Kuka.
- Carry small change in MKD. Public bathrooms, small market purchases, and tips for waitstaff (rounding up the bill is customary) are much easier with coins and small bills.
