Discover Beijing
Beijing has been China's capital for most of the last eight centuries, and it shows. At its centre stands the Forbidden City, the vast palace complex where 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties ruled, facing Tiananmen Square across Chang'an Avenue. The Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace and the Lama Temple complete a collection of imperial sites unmatched anywhere in the country.
Just beyond the city limits, the Great Wall winds across the mountains, with restored sections like Mutianyu and Jinshanling easily reached in a day. Back in the city, the hutongs, narrow alleys of courtyard houses, preserve the texture of old Beijing, where residents play mahjong, cycle between tiny shops and gather around the lakes of Shichahai.
Modern Beijing is a sprawling, fast-moving metropolis of futuristic architecture, art districts like 798 and a food scene built around Peking duck, dumplings and hearty northern noodles. It is the essential destination for understanding China's history and power.
