Antes de ir
Desde el aeropuerto
From Carrasco International (MVD), the most convenient option is a pre-booked taxi or remise (car service) for a fixed fare of approx $40-50 USD to the city center (30-45 min). The 'Copsa' bus line 700 is much cheaper (~$2 USD) but takes longer (60-90 min) and requires a 'STM' card.
Cómo moverse
The Ciudad Vieja, Centro, and Pocitos are very walkable. Distances between neighborhoods are large, so you'll need to combine walking with buses or taxis.
Consejos de la zona
- For the best asado, skip the tourist-packed Mercado del Puerto at peak hours and head to a local 'parrillada' in neighborhoods like Cordón or Punta Carretas, like 'La Pulpería'.
- Uruguayans dine late. Restaurants are often empty before 9 PM. Embrace the local schedule for a more authentic atmosphere.
- Carry a reusable thermos. You can get hot water for your mate for free at most gas stations (estaciones de servicio) and many bakeries.
