Discover Lanzarote
Lanzarote looks like nowhere else in Europe. Between 1730 and 1736, a series of eruptions buried a quarter of the island under lava, creating the black and rust-red landscapes of what is now Timanfaya National Park. Farmers adapted by planting vines in pits dug into the volcanic ash, producing the surreal vineyards of La Geria, and white villages with green and blue shutters dot the dark earth.
The island owes much of its character to the artist and architect César Manrique, who campaigned to keep high-rise development off the island and turned lava tubes, caves and viewpoints into extraordinary works of art and architecture, from the Jameos del Agua to the Mirador del Río. His influence is why Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
With almost constant sunshine and warm winters, Lanzarote is a popular beach and winter-sun destination, but it is equally rewarding for cyclists, surfers, divers and anyone curious about volcanoes. Its size makes it easy to explore in a few days by car.
