Navigation & Maps
Google Maps: Download offline maps before you go. Works for walking, transit, and driving. Maps.me: Backup option with detailed offline maps, useful when Google fails. Citymapper: Superior public transit in supported cities (London, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, etc.)—shows exactly which train car to board.
Pro Tip: Download offline maps on WiFi. Mobile data abroad is expensive, and coverage in rural areas is spotty.
Transportation
Omio/Trainline: Compare and book trains, buses, and flights across Europe. Flixbus: Budget bus travel—book directly for best prices. Rome2Rio: See all options between any two points. Local transit apps vary—download for each city (BVG Berlin, TMB Barcelona, RATP Paris).
Translation
Google Translate: Camera translation for menus and signs is magic. Download language packs offline. DeepL: More accurate translations for complex phrases—use when Google's output seems off. Learn basic phrases anyway; attempting the local language earns goodwill.
Money
Wise (formerly TransferWise): Best exchange rates for spending abroad. Get the debit card. XE Currency: Quick conversions when you need to calculate value. Your bank app: Check charges before you go; some banks have zero foreign fees.
Pro Tip: Always choose to pay in local currency, not your home currency. "Dynamic currency conversion" is a scam.
Accommodation & Food
Booking.com: Best for hotels and last-minute deals. Hostelworld: Essential for hostels. The Fork (TheFork): Restaurant reservations with discounts in France, Spain, Italy. Google Maps: Reviews and "popular times" help avoid crowded restaurants.
What You Don't Need
Skip: VPNs (rarely necessary in Europe), offline translators (Google Translate works fine), trip planning apps (they're always worse than a simple note), most city-specific guide apps (use blogs + Google Maps instead). Every additional app is battery drain and distraction. Less is more.
